Which Came First, the Cereal or the Milk: nitpicking and the Swedish Breakfast

I've had a lot of serious things running around my head lately in regards to Sweden and where I fit in here, but my head is heavy and I need a light-hearted break. And thus, thoughts from my breakfast table.

So which do you put first? Does it matter? Does anyone care?

I ask because this morning I found myself pouring yougurt into Little Swede's bowl, followed by the cereal.

OK, so it was yogurt and not milk (I don't think I've mentioned the awesome Swedish tradition of selling yogurt in large Tetra Pak cartons so it lasts for ages, is perfect to make smoothies, and much less wasteful than a cup of yogurt).

But growing up in the US I was always a cereal and then milk girl. I used to find it odd when I came to Sweden and my friends did the opposite, milk and then cereal. The Swede here also is a milk then cereal kinda guy. I feel like I can't accurately guage how much cereal I take that way. Plus it is just wacky. Also they use that nasty 'Sour milk.' (I have grown to appreciate Fil, but not one-hundred percent love it).

Now I find myself doing it.

What does it all mean? No, I hope it doesn't mean I've run out of things to write about.

  1. If its yogurt (and I miss the tetra pack) I do cereal then yogurt, but have always done cereal them milk and agree you can't see how much you get otherwise. Might not be a Swedish thing, just your family?

  2. I find pouring fil or yoghurt on top of cereal make things difficult. For example, with those thicker liquids you'll get air pockets in the cereal, and you have to dig down into the bowl to get them "up".

  3. I used to put cereal and then milk. Need the correct ratio of milk to cereal on a spoon. Of course my husband puts cereal first and then yogurt (not milk) on top. It's never the correct ratio then, but I still steal bites from him.

  4. This is an intressting question that I just never thought about before. For me it depends on if it is milk or youghurt I am using with my cereal. If it is yoghurt I pour it first but if it is milk and cereal it is the cereal I pour first. I guess I just made it even mor complex now ;-)

  5. Hmmm, so it seems it is the viscosity that is the deciding factor. I will keep that in mind. I am starting to have more yogurt than milk for breakfast, but still not on the up and up with the ratios.

  6. Definitely cereal first. Otherwise, you just splash milk everywhere when you put the cereal on top of it!

  7. If you want to appreciate fil, you must try organic Fjällfil. Fil done right. That is, produced like the old tradition in Northern Sweden :)
